Vat 9 is a blend of the best of Tyrell's old blocks that sit on the strip of red soil that runs through the winery.
The 2018 vintage, one of the earliest Shiraz harvests seen, was simply spectacular for Shiraz in the Hunter Valley. Warm, dry conditions kept cropping levels down, producing wines of great concentration and length of flavour. Intense purple in colour, the wine displays a pretty, red-berry nose with hints of subtle oak and lifted spice. The medium-bodied palate shows soft, sweet fruits and more of that subtle oak, all complemented by a fine, clean acid structure and long tannins. This is a classic Vat 9 that is destined to have a long life in the cellar.

Citronella and lemongrass aromatics envelop more subtle primary fruit that include peach skin and naartjie peel. Then also hints of vanilla, baked apple, marzipan and honey. The palate possesses verve and savoury grip, with elements of crushed river pebble, rock salt and flint, but also a grainy, pithy textural element akin to walnut and hard pear. There is real weight and mouth-filling substance, even at 12,5% ABV with complexity gained from lees contact and completely integrated oak. Bone dry, savoury finish.

Using the highest quality Pinot Noir grapes, this iconic rose is one of the few Rose Champagnes that is made by drawing the juice from the black grapes in the vat, instead of blending red and white wines. This gives it the highly expressive bouquet and delicous raspberry and wild cherry flavours tht have made it a benchmark for Rose Champagnes around the world.
